Meet GRR’s Ginger, she is beautiful, athletic, and a little bit spicy! Ginger is house-trained and does not seem to need a crate, as she does well being baby-gated in a small area in the home. When she is left alone she enjoys a Kong or a lick-mat, and will greet you with a happy sprawl and tail wags upon your return! Ginger will occasionally jump up on people out of sheer delight in seeing a human, but with practice, she is quickly learning to sit politely instead…still sometimes her puppy excitement takes over though! On that note, Ginger LOVES all people, she would likely do well with children, but she is rather athletic and might accidentally knock someone over, but would NEVER do so intentionally. She is very gentle taking treats and is calm and patient in the car.
Ginger loves other dogs and is particularly fond of the resident dog in her foster home. She is not reactive to other dogs and will only bark at them in solidarity with her fellow canine companion! When it comes to walking on a leash, Ginger does need some practice - she CAN walk on a looser leash with motivation of treats and practice with a clicker, but when out for a walk she is incredibly distracted by all the things (grackles, squirrels, leaves, wind, etc.). With that said, she will need someone who will work with her and practice appropriate leash walking as it is a work in progress. She is said to be very teachable, smart, and willing to learn, but she needs consistency and a positive relationship for ultimate success. When it’s time to play and retrieve, Ginger loves to chase tennis balls and she will run like the wind or engage in a tug-of-war challenge! She also seems to enjoy the water after the chance to play in a baby pool. In the house, Ginger is a full-on Golden Retriever - she loves to be petted and adored.
An area that Ginger does require some extra attention is when it comes to her strong interest in “hunting” for other creatures. This explains some of her distractions when out for a walk, as she is highly interested in all other critters. She does not have a great relationship with the cat who lives in her foster home and will bark at and attempt to chase after the cat. There is also a resident bird and rabbit in her foster home, so Ginger is kept separate from all non-canine animals in her foster home. However, when it’s time to eat her meals, Ginger shows her best manners by sitting and waiting politely until she is told she can eat. She sleeps well through the night and is a somewhat early riser. Ginger is a loving, energetic, and intelligent Golden; she learns very quickly, loves a reward for doing something well, and especially appreciates a loving pat or positive accolades. So far, she has learned multiple commands in a short time in her foster home, and she is described as a ray of sunshine!
Ideal Home: For Ginger, a home with ample opportunities for exercise, strong leadership from her human(s), along with routine and structure is necessary. She is described as the perfect house dog, loving, responsive, and aiming to please, but outdoors she shows her athletic side along with her hunting instincts with a bit more focus and intensity than the average Golden. A home with space to run and enjoy the outdoors would be great for Ginger. Overall, this sweet and loving companion needs a family who will include her in their day to day activities, while also working with her to learn and grow.
