Personality:

Duchess is a Great Pyrenees/Golden Retriever mix with tons of beautiful gold coat, favoring the Great Pyrenees side. She’s a really nice old gal and is pretty happy. She likes to do her own thing and as in the Great Pyrenees tradition, can be aloof, independent, stubborn and comfortable making her own decisions. Duchess likes massages, cuddling and riding in cars and she’s a great car rider. She can be very loving and loves to have her ears and back scratched. She does not suffer fools lightly; she will tell pushy dogs to get back and be polite, then will get along fine with them once they know their place and respect the “royal Duchess.”

Duchess walks nicely on leash, unless she decides to stop and then she won't move until she is good and ready. A little motivation and patience will go a long way, though. She enjoys her treats! Duchess shows no human aggression at all but may snap at pushy dogs to let them know she’s not in the mood to be messed with but it doesn’t go any further than that. She is afraid during storms and can be soothed a bit by being cuddled and wrapped in a blanket by her human companion.  Fireworks are not as bad as storms but cause some unrest. Duchess is very well mannered inside the house and manages herself well with or without you there. She does not have the typical Golden Retriever personality, though. The “Royal Duchess” doesn’t play with toys which is part of her Great Pyrenees heritage.

Ideal home: This is a great dog for someone who would enjoy an independent companion who will be happy to get a little love whenever you’re willing to provide it but will also be happy to be allowed to do her own thing. Duchess sometimes may think she’s royalty and not always do what you want her to but calm and assertive correction with a little patience will go a long way. She may not do well with small spirited and active children but she is fine with people in general. When she’s let outside her stubborn personality may appear and you may have some difficulty getting her in but calm assertive correction and a little positive motivation will let her know that you are still the King and/or Queen!  Duchess is a beautiful sweet girl who just needs a little patience from her companion in a fairly calm environment.
