Lucia is a beautiful young Golden mix with a personality that will steal your heart away!  Only a few days ago Lucia was out on the streets, fending for herself when she was turned into the Laredo Animal Shelter.  Her life on her own had not been kind, as she had flees and intestinal parasites. The GRR volunteer network went into action and she was soon on her way to Austin for a change of scenery.  Let the new life begin!

Personality: Her initial visit with the GRR veterinarian addressed her minor ailments, but fundamentally, Lucia is in sound health.  The best news was that she was tested as heartworm negative, and although initially underweight, has been in great spirits from day one of her GRR adventure.

Her interaction with two and four legged visitors has truly been “Golden”.  She lives with three children and has met other children who come to visit. She loves to cuddle and play ball.  She has a trusting outlook on life that everyone will be loving in return.  Even with her calm nature, her excitement occasionally gets the better of her and she will jump up, but she is quickly improving her manners.  She now knows “drop it” and “sit” among other commands, and it’s been fun to see her gain confidence in herself.  Lucia also plays well with her fosters’ other canine, Max.  They have gotten into a routine of playing tug of war even though she is considerably smaller than Max.  Tug of war is great, but they truly enjoy running in big circles and chasing each other.  Max has become her best buddy, and at night they sleep next to each other, Max on his dog bed and Lucia in her crate. Max is her protector when meeting other new dogs, as she waits behind Max before meeting and greeting.   No problems at all with this girl’s socialization!  To her credit, she even ignored the felines she encountered in the veterinarian’s waiting room.

She is creative and talented in the “retrieving” category.  She will readily retrieve her favorite yellow ball to you, but if you aren’t available when she’s ready to retrieve, she will bounce the ball off the wall and retrieve it herself!

Given her young age, and her previous life on her own, it is amazing that she has acclimated to life inside the house so quickly.  She's very calm for a young dog. Only a couple of “accidents” so far have kept her record from being perfect.  Remember the fireworks on the fourth of July? No problem for Lucia at all.

This girl, by all indications, will grow into an outstanding companion in a household large or small.  Someone is going to be very lucky when Lucia arrives at their door.

Ideal Home:    Lucia is such a great dog, (calm, smart and VERY sweet), she would be a stellar family member in almost any home. She is so young that her ideal situation would be one in which someone is home more, with the time and energy to keep her engaged and learning.
