Hailey... Update
on Miss Hailey the Heavyweight
Daily kibble: 2 scoops a day
Dog toys: a few will do
Walks in the park: free
100 lbs of curly red companionship: priceless
Hailey’s journey into GRR foster care came via the San Antonio shelter. Her
previous owners said they were moving and couldn’t take a big dog along—and
turned her in. Judging from her extra-long nails, unbrushed furdo, and generous
love handles, she had been leading a sedentary outdoor lifestyle, perhaps
supplemented with some extra “guilt” feedings. Plump but healthy, she can chase
down a ball with the best of them and really gets excited about a good romp
about the yard or a jog around the block.
Hailey the Wonderdog is living proof that good things come in not-very-small
packages. She is an alert, well-mannered house dog, with great “inside living”
skills: she is impeccably housetrained, doesn’t mob or jump on visitors, and is
way past the chew-and-destroy stage. She seeks quiet corners for her naps, loves
having her own dog pillow, and sleeps very soundly by our bed at night,
patiently waiting for signs of life from the humans before she begins her day.
Like many smart female Goldens, Hailey takes the alpha role around other dogs of
lesser cunning, and can be wary when sizing up new canine acquaintances. Her
first reaction is to bark, then approach cautiously, then decide whether they
pass muster. If they don’t, it’s time to move along, and she is easily handled
on a leash. She is also suspicious of certain cars and the big bad UPS truck.
Hailey demands little and gives lots. She doesn’t “pester” for attention but
soaks it up when some comes her way. And she just beams when told, “You are a
very good girl!” Sometimes she tries to get her way by woofing, but gives it up
when “shushed” or ignored. Hailey would love to be the only dog for you, and she
is so responsive to clear direction that additional training would most likely
produce some amazing results. Once her weight loss goal is reached, “Hailey the
Comet” could become a real star!
