Ranger...
Hey dog
lovers! Ranger here, your number 1
people-lovin’ dog, reporting for adoption.
Sorry it’s been so long since my last report… it took me a little longer
than expected, as I have been on injured reserve.
Seems I tore something in my shoulder and needed an operation.
I like to tell the gals it was a baseball injury—I’m a
I’ve
been recuperating with my foster mom (FM) who is convinced I’m the goofiest,
most entertaining dog she has ever had.
Hey, what can I say? I’m a
young, playful Superstar! You can’t
deny that I’m a handsome devil, can you?
I could
probably use a little one-on-one training, because, like I said, I am young. And
I am very trainable. I’m really good
at focusing and paying attention.
And there’s hardly anything that doesn’t motivate me.
I love food, attention, toys, stuff to chew on, playing fetch, love and
kisses… oh, whatever you’re willing to give, I’m first in line.
My FM keeps a pretty close watch on me whenever I’m out and about because
sometimes I don’t know what’s okay to chew on and what isn’t.
Or sometimes I do know, but just want to see if she’s paying attention to
me.
So when
she can’t keep an eye on me, I stay very nicely in my crate.
I go in without any hassle (with treats of course), and mind myself like
a gentleman. I’m perfectly potty
trained, too. Plus, I like to ride
in the car, and I don’t get bothered by thunderstorms.
I like
to go for walks, and I do pretty well on my leash, but I could probably use a
little coaching on how to not get so distracted by all those living things out
there in the world. There are
people, and dogs, and birds, and squirrels, and lizards, and, well, I don’t
suppose I’ll ever run out of fun stuff to investigate while out on a walk!
Original Story:
Our first look at Ranger was a photograph taken while he was still at Town Lake
Animal Shelter. It was obvious he was a good looking one-year-old Golden. But
what was also obvious was that he looked sad. Goldens shouldn’t look so sad! We
knew we could get his great golden smile to come back!
We had a not-so-secret weapon—Jingles! He’s our 8-month-old Golden puppy, and he
was just itchin’ for a playmate! After the initial meet & greet with our family
of three Goldens, it didn’t take long to break the ice. At first Ranger was kind
of shy and timid; but by day three, he seemed to say,” Wow! Did I ever luck out!
Good chow, good treats, good walks, good dog beds, good buddies, and best of all
good lovin’!“
He’s gone from a slight 60 pounds to a more handsome 65. A bath (and multiple
swimming dates at Barton Creek) have made his coat much softer and fuller.
Ranger is one of those Golden boys who loves to play, loves to love, and loves
to do whatever you want to do. He has fit into our house with three other
Goldens, and learned all the right manners and all the right laps to fit into.
He likes to sit on you, sit around you, sit beside you, sit behind you, and
climb on top of you, just to have some gentle touching. And he’ll go and stay
wherever you tell him, because he just wants to please.
Ranger hasn’t had any accidents in the house, and even sometimes cries at the
door if he’s been inside too long for his bladder! He knows when it’s time to
relax, and he can relax very nicely— especially if he’s near your feet. He’s a
“leaner” in that he likes to lean on your legs when he’s standing near you. He
eats heartily at his own bowl, but leaves the other dogs’ food alone… but we
suspect he would counter-surf if left alone in reach of people food.
Ranger loves the water. He will fetch a tennis ball and sometimes even give it
back to you without coaxing. He’s perfecting his swimming strokes and sometimes
lapses into the vertical mode and bites at the water he’s splashing. It’s funny
to watch. He knows basic commands like SIT, SHAKE, and COME, and is
exceptionally good on his walks. We haven’t observed him with cats or children,
but we suspect he’d be very interested in cats, just like he’s very interested
in squirrels; and he’d probably love to play with any school-age children he can
meet.
Ranger will fit into an active house with or without another dog, and will be a
great friend forever. And what family wouldn’t count themselves lucky to find a
handsome Texas Ranger to take care of them? He doesn’t want to be a Lone Ranger
anymore!
