Shelly..
This pretty girl is Shelly, a young girl about one year old who was found stray
- one of a little band of three good-looking goldens apprehended by Animal
Control and brought to a local shelter. She’d just recently had pups and headed
to the vet for spay surgery, then settled into her foster home. She has fit in
wonderfully from the start! She was introduced to her sleeping crate the first
night and, even though she was frightened at first about going inside, she has
slept without a sound each and every night in our bedroom.
Shelly has a lovely, calm, sweet temperament and gets along just fine with our
two Goldens, even though one of them has a rather sour disposition -- but Shelly
pretty much ignores her. The big surprise was how well she does with the two
important cat members of the family, Emily & Lydia! Kailie (the sourpuss
mentioned earlier) growls and barks loudly if the cats try to venture down the
hall, but when we took Shelly into the laundry room to meet the cats, we found
out that EMILY LIKES SHELLY!! Usually, Emily hisses, spits, and throws up if
another dog is in the house. On Shelly’s second night, Emily even ventured to
our bedroom and Shelly circled our bed as Emily batted playfully at her. Then
Emily rubbed noses with Shelly. Lydia followed us to the bedroom a little later
to join in on the fun. Wow! Shelly loves to help take care of the cats.
Shelly is definitely a
“people” dog. She is content to stay by our side all day. If we go to another
room and shut her out, she stays quietly right by the door waiting for us to
open it so she can be with us again. She has no fear of being stepped on and is
about the same color as our floor, so we have learned to watch our step.
Even though we know Shelly lived outdoors in the past, she hasn’t had even one
accident. She also takes treats gently from our hands. She does jump up a bit
for attention, and she once started to do a little digging in the flower bed,
but she can be corrected just by using a stern tone of voice. (She did act
scared after being corrected for digging, which leads us to believe she may not
always have been treated gently in the past.)
Shelly has long legs, runs faster than the speed of sound playing ball in the
backyard, and is a natural retriever. She also likes to run with our son’s
one-year-old Golden girl. She’s still quite underweight at 63 pounds, but she is
slowly gaining weight and will probably be 15 to 20 pounds heavier when she is
fully grown. She will be a big girl and will need someone willing to give her
the exercise that she needs—and, of course, the love she so deserves. She is
truly a wonderful dog!
