Duke...
This handsome red boy came to GRR last
December. His original owner had noticed soon after she got him that his eyes
were not quite the same color, so she took her new pup off to the eye
specialist. She learned that Duke had a large cataract in one eye, and on top of
that, blood vessels that should have closed off at birth were still dilated,
further interfering with his vision. Not that this bothered Duke! He was as full
of puppy high spirits as any other Golden… but the combination of high energy
and concern over future vet bills decided his owner to surrender him just after
his first birthday.
Duke first lived with a wonderful trainer & foster mom who taught Mr Wild Man
many manners, AND he had surgery on his bad eye. His vision is not 100% normal,
but it is improved, and he is a happy camper! His first foster home has just
taken in another high-energy GRR Golden for Charm School, so Duke has moved to a
new home, and here’s the report. As you can see, Duke gets an A-plus!
Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl... Here is another wonderful, beautiful, loving,
fun, sweet, well-behaved Golden Retriever for a lucky person or family to adopt!
As a GRR foster mom, I am constantly amazed with our rescue Goldens and their
ability to learn and adapt so quickly. Duke settled right in and was allowed to
run loose on the 7 acres on his second day here. He comes readily when called
(awesome)—even if he is distracted by something, he will stop and return
(fantastic!). If you’re out working in the yard, he is not far from you; he
enjoys just lying down and watching. He loves to swim and has a magnificent time
playing in the water with two of my other dogs. He has made friends with all the
dogs and people he has met, and he couldn’t care less about the horse and donkey
out back. He wants to play with the cats but doesn’t realize that THEY don’t
want to play with HIM (what crabs!). After being slapped a couple of times, he
leaves them alone… until the next time.
Duke is also very good on
a leash. When he feels a tug or is at the end of the leash, he will stop and
wait for you to catch up or just stay beside you. He is excited to meet new
people but is not real jumpy or pushy; he calms down quickly.
I find him so easy to groom. You can brush him, do his nails, clean his ears, et
cetera… you just have to do a lot of it while he is on his back! Make sure you
rub his belly every now and then. After a swim, he just loves being toweled dry.
He is fine when riding in the car. One funny thing he does with bucket seats is
sit on the back seat with his front feet on the floor and his head poking
through onto the console. He just has to be close to you.
What a gentleman he is in the house! He may play for a bit with the other dogs,
but as a rule, he is right beside you, on the floor. Oh, he loves to have his
tummy rubbed and be told how good a boy he is (which is nothing but the truth!).
He loves his stuffed toys, but he’s not a chewer and doesn’t rip them up. He
spends the night quietly in his crate. During the day, I have left him loose in
the house for short periods, and everything has been fine upon my return. When
he needs to go out, he’ll pace around to let you know.
The limited sight in one eye doesn’t bother him a bit! The one time I even
notice it is when I offer a treat; he can’t always judge where it is and may hit
your fingers with his teeth. If he knows where the treat is, he is very gentle.
Gosh, here I am again, with another GREAT Golden that I would love to have as my
own but can’t because I have three already. So... here he is... waiting for you
to come and take him to his “forever” home. Can you give him the love and life
he deserves?? Then hurry, before I change my mind!
