Abigail...
I am pleased to present Abigail—or just Abi, if you prefer. She is a petite,
blonde, 6 1/2-year-old girl who came to us when her original owner could no
longer keep her—she had moved from a house to a small apartment, and the rules
said “no big dogs.” And Abi was just too big. The owner was heartbroken at
having to give up her wonderful girl, and GRR promised: “We’ll find Abigail a
special family who will think that she’s the very best thing that ever happened
to them!”
Abi fit right into our home. She is housebroken and well-trained. She knows all
the house rules and is very calm. She just wants to be close to you and could
easily turn into a 60-pound lap dog if you let her. And (too late!) she already
knows how nice the big bed is and has to be ushered off when the people want to
crawl in! Are you that special family who loves to have a sweet Golden follow
you around as you work, then sleep at your feet?
How is she with kids, you ask? Well, the day we brought her into our house, we
had a 6-month-old grandson stay over for three days. Just learning to crawl, he
constantly used Abi for leverage, grasping two handfuls of her fur to pull
himself around. She slept through the whole thing! A special family will be
happy to wipe the dog hair off the baby and take pictures of him crawling over
Abi-dog.
Abi is a great car rider. She jumps in, lies down and goes to sleep. She loves
to go out and is always up for getting groceries and quick trips around town. A
special family will be happy to have a canine companion for all those day-to-day
errands!
Abi goes to the vet’s this week. We’ll get her all caught up on her shots, get a
full check-up, and then GRR will start looking for a family out there to love
Abi forever. Are you special enough to deserve Abi-dog? If you think you’re “the
one,” contact the Gold Ribbon Adoption Team and let them know that Abi is just
what you have been looking for! 11-8-06
Update 11/08/06:
We came out of the vet’s office with great news. No worms, no noticeable hip
problems, no heart problems. Abi’s teeth are great, and she has no lumps or
bumps. Just two minor concerns: Abi weighs 70.2 pounds, which is about 6 pounds
overweight, and one ear is a little inflamed (a minor yeast problem, easy to
treat). We are working on both of those issues. (We HAVE been working through a
40-pound bag of higher-fat puppy chow from the last foster dog, so I am at fault
for some of the weight problem!)
Abi got three shots and all the mandatory pokes, prods, and embarrassing
tests—and two treats from the vet. No complaints on Abi's part. Our GRR vet said
she loves the way Abi smiles when she meets you.
Also, Abi has become the latest celebrity in our neighborhood. She walks very
well on the leash with no pulling. All the kids on the block run up to pet her
and Abi just sits and enjoys it all. As Abi settles into our home routine, she
just becomes more at ease. We did hear her bark for the first time yesterday…
just announcing some dog was on the other side of the fence!
Abi is officially ready for adoption. She is a great house dog, family dog,
kid's dog, kitty’s dog, companion dog and any other kind of dog you may be
looking for! Well, maybe not a hunting dog, as you may have trouble getting her
out of bed early in the morning...
Update 11/10/06:
Abi just continues to amaze us as she
becomes more comfortable with our family. Last night, Nancy was sick with the
flu. She was up all night with "the symptoms" and wound up just lying on the
bathroom floor.
Her husband (whoever that is) and her two dogs slept through the whole thing.
BUT, Nurse Abi was at her side all night long. And she is lying right beside her
right now, waiting for a call from the doc.
What a dog!
