Sheriff...
A dedicated posse of volunteers rounded up the Sheriff and brought him in from East Texas. He’s been through a lot in his short life—including a few gunfights, apparently (the vet removed some buckshot pellets from under his skin). We’ll treat his tick disease first, then tackle a very heavy load of heartworms. There’s a long road ahead for this boy, but despite his problems, he couldn’t be sweeter.
UPDATE 8/23: Sheriff is doing well and looking forward to his first
shot sometime in September. In the meantime, he is having a great time in foster
care and plans to attend obedience school in the fall. “That will be something
to occupy him and focus his energy while he has to be calm for the HW
treatment,” says his foster mom.
Update
10/25:
Sheriff has started his heartworm treatment at last! When he saw the vet in June, he had a high heartworm load, a very high microfilaria count—one of the highest his vet had ever seen—and tick disease to boot. But after four months in care, his tick disease is just about eradicated, his microfilaria count is ZERO (yes, that’s right!), and he shows a medium worm load. What an improvement! This will make the treatment easier on him, but we are still taking it slow – one shot a month for three months. The more “gradual approach” means he won’t have to be on complete exercise restriction; he can’t do anything overly vigorous or strenuous, but he’ll still be able to play with his foster Golden brother Duke and go for walks. Sheriff is doing great otherwise. He’s such a friendly boy and follows his foster mom everywhere! She says, “He is a great dog.”
