Kylie
of the amber eyes and soft, lush caramel coat is a shelter dog. She came from
the PAWS shelter in Kyle, picked up as a stray. Kylie had obviously already had
at least one litter of pups, and she tested positive for heartworms.
A shelter dog is always a mystery. We piece together the puzzle of her history
as we get to know her.
Here a clue: good with grade-school-age children, There a clue: intimidated by
large dogs, but not all, just some and only Kylie knows why. Has the demeanor of
a fully grown Golden but the Beauty Queen smile of a youngster. Fascinated with
cats and frogs, wanting to sniff them to learn more about them. Kylie has never
met a person she did not like. She sits in front of you, very still, waiting for
some pets and looks up into your eyes with an expression that says “I love you”
-- friend or just met, it’s all the same to her.
Kylie is no stranger to a collar and leash—she walks nicely with just a little
pulling—yet she was far from housetrained when she came to us. Her signal was to
bark, bark, bark: “I need to go out NOW!”… but that was also her signal for “I’m
hungry,” “I’m lonely,” “Feed me,” “Pet me,” and “More water please.” We taught
her to use her “inside voice” to tell us she needs to go out, so her nickname is
now Squeaky.
Kylie is the only dog, Golden or otherwise, who apparently has an “off button”
on the top of her head. If she’s barking, we put a hand on her head and she
calms down. Who taught her that? You can take anything away from her, no
problem. You can trim her back paws, no problem, but she gets mouthy if you trim
the front paws. You can lift her ears for a look, handle her all over, and she
just loves the attention. Kylie knows what a stuffed Kong is and she loves them;
she also loves stuffed sterilized bones. Kylie is happy baby-gated or in a crate
so long as she has her chew toys. She displays no concerns during thunderstorms.
If you are looking for a dog who will flourish with additional training and lots
of owner interaction, then you’ll have the adventure of a lifetime with this
sweet, sweet Golden girl.
