Ginger
My name is Ginger! I’m a tiny golden
girl (only 43 pounds!) and I just turned two. I’m looking for a family to love
me for the rest of my life. Here’s what my foster mom has to say about me (I
didn’t know she watches me as closely as I watch her!)....
“Ginger came to GRR after her previous owner went through a divorce, had some
other family health issues to work through, and sadly decided she could no
longer adequately care for Ginger. She dearly loved Ginger, and the feeling was
clearly mutual….while Ginger adores children, and likes all her family (dogs
included), she absolutely attaches herself to a “mom.”
When Ginger came to GRR her coat was rough and she was thin. Today she has
gained some fringe and has a beautiful medium-gold soft coat, and she is cute
and petite. She loves to put her head in your lap for love and attention. Two of
her funniest quirks are her fascination with human hair (she will lick it into a
spike if you let her), and her instant response if you cough (she comes running
to comfort you every time).
Ginger hadn’t been well-socialized to the outside world as a puppy, and was
anxious when she first arrived at GRR. But while she has been in foster care,
she has made huge strides. She now loves to play with dogs of all sizes, and she
is good with a cat that will hold its ground (but might chase a cat that runs).
She enjoys meeting new people, particularly if they give her a chance to check
them out first before greeting her. (Big men with big voices might still make
her a little shy, but she quickly says hello if they give her a moment to adapt
to them). She continues to adore children and will happily give them a “high
five” once she’s been introduced. She enjoys walks around the neighborhood, but
she is still worried about car rides. We are still working this with her-- she
has improved and now seems to realize that a car ride does not automatically
mean a trip to the vet!
Ginger is a homebody at heart, though….she absolutely loves to be home with her
family, in her house and in her yard, and she would love a family with a quieter
lifestyle. She is not a high-energy dog, does not bolt, and hardly ever jumps
up. And she loves to please, so she is easy to train—she is housetrained, and
she knows “Sit,” “Stay,” “Come here,” “High five,” “Off,” “Hop up” (used for the
car), and has almost mastered “Lie down.” Once she has figured out the routine
in a home, she thrives on the structure. She would love to share the furniture
with you, but doesn’t here because she isn’t invited. She can be a
counter-surfer! But if we remember to keep the counters clean, she is
trustworthy in the house, and in fact, given her anxiety in smaller spaces like
a car, I would not recommend crating her, but baby gating her if you want to
keep her from certain areas.
Ginger needs a “mom” to lavish her love on— a mom who is home a fair amount, and
who will just enjoy sitting and relaxing together (that love will be returned
with complete devotion and adoration!). A family with a “dad” and kids and a dog
or two would be icing on the cake. Ginger can’t wait to meet her new family!”
