ADOPTED

Jack... Hi. My name is Jack. I am a golden-red five-year-old boy, and everyone says I am really handsome (people do say that about me, honest! I am not just bragging). I came to GRR recently because my family got very busy and did not have enough time for me. This new lifestyle sure is different! Instead of staying outdoors 24/7, I am living in a house with my foster parents and two other Goldens. This house stuff is pretty cool, and I am learning all kinds of things called “house rules.” They are sure different from backyard rules! I’m also having to take some English lessons, as my former family spoke mostly Spanish.

I have learned that I need to do my business outside, on a leash no less! That took some getting used to, but mom and dad helped by giving me a piece of pepperoni when I did the right thing. At first I thought I would get a piece of pepperoni if I just went to a certain fencepost and asked, but then I figured out that the “business” end of the deal was what got me the pepperoni, not just politely pointing out the post.

At first I had to spend nearly all my time in the house in my crate. You see, the day before I came to my foster home, I got “altered” at the vet clinic. So I had to remain cool, calm, and collected while my incision healed. I wouldn’t want to rough house with the other Goldens and cause any setbacks! So crate time it is, at times. After the first day, mom and dad traded in the standard-size crate for the supersized issue – whew! That it made it easier for a tall guy like me to stand up and move freely about the crate. I sleep soundly all night long in my crate, too.

Other things I have learned: Do not bolt out the door but WAIT until mom or dad go out; SIT when asked to; and WAIT again until it is time to walk. And I have discovered the pleasures of “THE BELLY RUB” and “THE CHIN SCRATCH.”

I really like going on walks on leash and am getting the hang of not pulling—even with so many interesting things to see. Wow, deer and horses and a cow, oh my! Even with all these fascinating things around, my foster parents are making sure I know my city manners.

I know I am going to make someone a wonderful Golden family member. I feel young and vigorous, and like a new man, er, dog. Are you going to be my new family?
