ADOPTED

Blaster... I’d like to introduce you to my newest best friend! Seven-year-old Blaster is big red Golden who has been a welcome guest in our home for the last few weeks. At approximately 95 pounds, Blaster would do well to trim down just a little, but most of that weight is just due to his large frame and muscular build. His nicknames already include the following: “the linebacker,” “the red bear,” and “the tank.” You get the picture: there’s a lot to love with this head-turning fellow!

When you meet Blaster, the first thing you notice is his enthusiastic, rapid-fire tail wag—it sends his whole back end into gyrations that put Elvis to shame. The next thing you notice is how sweet and loving he is. Blaster loves to plop down by your side, ensuring that some part of his body is wedged up against you. He loves to be scratched, especially on his tummy, and will gently request that you continue if you have stopped. Blaster loves to be groomed and is a perfect gentleman during bathing.

When he’s not soaking up the love, Blaster’s favorite pastime is a good game of tug-o-war. And with his strength and heft, he makes a formidable competitor! He also enjoys a waist-deep dip in the water, but at the recent Oom Pup Paws party, he didn’t seem interested in actually going for a swim.

It’s easy to see that Blaster grew up in a loving home where he was deeply cherished. Someone clearly spent a great deal of time training this guy, and the result is a dog with very good manners, basic obedience, and a genuine eagerness to please. He does pull a little on the leash when he’s “blasting” out of the starting gate, but within a few minutes, he settles nicely into a comfortable pace. He doesn’t jump on the furniture, rarely chews on things, and doesn’t bark too much. He is a very good passenger in the car and was praised for his good behavior at the vet.

We try to keep a policy of not leaving tempting food items within the reach of curious canines, but—and I’m not making any accusations!—a couple of dinner rolls mysteriously disappeared from the counter a few days back. Lack of evidence and the presence on the scene of another suspect (our Golden, Andy) leave the case unsolved.

Blaster has been a wonderful, admirably patient playmate for our 3 1/2-year-old son; he seems to have a natural sense about being gentle and kind with children. That said, my feeling is that Blaster’s size and strength might make him a little bit “too much” for a home with very small children (under age 3). He’ll do great with children over 3, and with other dogs. Blaster craves attention and is looking for a family to shower him with lots of love—and in return, he’ll give you all his devotion, loyalty, and companionship. You won’t find a better deal than that anywhere!
