ADOPTED

Missy... Six-month-old Missy came to GRR when her owners realized that they were not active enough for a typical peppy Golden puppy. She weighs 40 pounds now, and she’ll probably reach about 60 pounds at her full adult size. She is a real beauty, with good conformation, a pretty face, and long, curly reddish fur.  Missy’s health is excellent, she’s up to date on all her shots, and she has been spayed. She is house-trained and hasn’t had a single accident. She even stays off the furniture—except for our bed (baaad foster family!).

When Missy first came to our house, she was very anxious and kept her tail between her legs most of the time. What a difference one week makes! Missy has gained confidence and turned into a wonderful little puppy. The only thing that has spooked her in the last couple of days is the ferocious UPS truck-monster. She is full of happy energy, enthusiasm, and love of life, and will play until she’s ready to drop from fatigue. And then she falls asleep. As I write this, she is napping at my feet, so close that I will have to be careful when moving my chair.

Missy thinks people are wonderful and walks right up to everyone asking for pats—which she generally gets, of course, because she is just so cute! She especially likes children and is good with kids as young as four or five. She’s also great with other dogs and has a knack for getting them to play with her. Our big male Golden Cooper has taken her under his wing, and she has declared him leader of the pack and follows him everywhere.

We took Missy swimming in Lake Austin a few days ago. She LOVES to swim and is a little mermaid. She ducks her head entirely under water when she grabs at a floating tennis ball, and happily jumps off a dock into water over her head. She swims almost as fast as Cooper, though she’s only half his size. To top it off, Missy is very smart and learns exceptionally rapidly. How smart? A few days ago I saw her doing calculus problems ... in her head ... without pencil and paper.

All right, I admit, that last comment was hyperbole … but Missy really is a perfect Golden Retriever puppy, exactly the little girl everyone thinks they want. Just be sure you really do want a PUPPY. Unless you’re Lance Armstrong, she probably has more energy than you do; and like all puppies, she chews and mouths things. Be prepared to lay in a supply of chew toys for every room—and to detach her little jaws from the corner of your favorite rug as needed! Though she’s as sharp as they come, she sometimes still “forgets” to come or sit; and she pulls on her leash and jumps on people when excited. It’ll be another year or so before she finally matures into a well-mannered adult … but there will so much fun and entertainment along the way, as absolutely nothing beats a puppy for pure joie de vivre. If you’re looking for a young, energetic, smart Golden and can provide the environment and direction she needs as she grows up, Missy is the one for you!
