King
Louie - “the rat-tail Golden”
So what happens to a stray dog on the run? Well, if you’re a long haired GR, you
wind up with grass burrs matted in your hair and locked up in the city Pound.
And what does the Pound do with a matted burr-encrusted Golden? They shave his
butt and tail and then call GRR.
And that is how King Louie came to us. King, “the rat-tailed Golden.“ A four
year old 85lb. honey male GR with a great personality and a shaved hind-end.
King is an exceptional GR. I commented to the GRR Foster Coordinators that it is
amazing how some dogs come to us with a built in "trust factor." The first
night, King slept in his crate. After that, he had the run of the house, He is
house broken, respects our cat, plays with our Golden, does not chew up stuff,
and generally knows the house rules. For a dog once on the run, he figured out
the king-size bed and our couch real fast and loves to cuddle the last thing at
night and first thing in the morning. Once he tried to put his front feet up on
the counter for some serious counter-surfing but a simple stern word corrected
that behavior and it has never happened again.
King
just went to the vet this week for a check-out. He has a bunch of little
scratches and holes from the grass burrs that are really visible right now since
he is shaved. The vet said he is a “fancy boy” whatever that means and gave him
a clean bill of health. No evident hip problems, good teeth, clean ears and big
feet.
He is a typical GR in the fact that it took almost 2 weeks before we began to
see his real personality. Initially, he was very shy and preferred to lay by
himself in the crate or water closet. He did not want that dog catcher sneaking
up on him again. But, now, King plays, loves to cuddle, follows us around and is
a perfect gentleman around company.
One concern we have uncovered is his behavior on the leash. He wants to run,
pull and is easily distracted. It is hard to walk around the neighborhood being
the only Golden with a shaved tail. How "em-bare-assing".. (Can we say that on
the web?) King really needs some obedience training to reign him in a little.
But, you might want to wait a couple of months before enrolling him in a class..
Bad for the self-esteem to be in front of your peers if you can’t shake your
tail feathers!
King is ready to find a forever family. He will do great with kids and other
dogs or cats. It will take him a week or two before he figures out your routines
and then he will be your perfect dog. He would like to be a lap dog and
sometimes forgets his size but overall he is destined to become someone’s very
best friend. And before his hair grows back, you can have the only rat-tailed
Golden in the city. Be the first to love this dog!
