ADOPTED
Cooper...
Just before the Memorial Day weekend, a Good Samaritan found a handsome red
Golden wandering stray. She took him to a local vet clinic for “safekeeping”—but
with the holiday fast approaching and boarders arriving by the minute, there was
literally no room at the inn for Cooper! So, the clinic put in an emergency call
to GRR.
Right from the start, Cooper impressed the clinic staff and everyone else with
his sweet personality and friendly, happy, pure Golden attitude. GRR volunteer
Mike gave him a lift to his foster home and said, “We worked with him for about
45 minutes before taking him to his foster family. We played, petted him, and
pretty much sat around on the grass. He was very gentle with my daughter while
she was sitting on the ground. He approached carefully, lay down next to her,
and put his head on her arm. He responds very well to SIT, DOWN, and STAY. He’s
a happy dog for sure!”
Cooper has been living with his foster family for a couple of weeks now. First
order of business was flea treatment and few baths—Cooper was absolutely jumping
with fleas when he was found, and had clearly been on his own outside for a
while. He had an ear infection, too. But he’s flea-free and feeling fine now!
Here’s what his foster dad has to say:
Cooper is friendly to all he meets—dogs, adults, and children. He’s excellent
with other dogs and very gentle with kids. He attended the “Shake, Paddle, and
Roll” swimfest and went around making friends with everyone, like the social
butterfly he is! In fact, he was so busy interacting with the people and dogs on
dry land that he almost forgot to take a little dip in the pond.
Our old Golden, Cindy, has let Cooper know that she is the boss and “mother hen”
around here, and he’s laid back and lets her have her way. She sometimes even
marches up and takes a toy that he is playing with—but he just lies there
comfortably and watches her, no growling or defending the toy.
When Mike met him, he commented that Cooper pulls on the lead like a train, and
that is true: he is definitely a “tugger” – goes beyond just pulling! On walks,
we have been using a pinch collar. He has responded really well and is already
pulling less than he did at first.
Cooper is fully house-trained, and he’s very well behaved indoors. He doesn't
counter surf. However, after seeing the vet, each time we returned to the lobby,
he jumped and put his paws on the counter, looking at the receptionist with his
happy face. Each time he received a treat. (Clever dog!)
He rides well in the car – just relaxes and looks out the window.
Cooper is loving and affectionate, and he’ll fit right into his new family. I
think he’d enjoy another dog for companionship, and he’d probably be great in a
family with small children. This dog is really a prize!
