ADOPTED

Wyatt... Just 1 1/2 years old, Wyatt came to GRR from the shelter, where he’d been delivered as a stray. No owner appeared to claim this beautiful red boy, so he got his official GRR number and headed off to the vet for a check-up. (Our volunteer reported that “he is a good boy! he rode in the truck like a dream, either lay down or stood and looked out the window.”) The vet called the next day: “He’s a wonderful dog, but he’s got heartworms.” Well, not any more! Wyatt had his heartworm treatment a few weeks ago, moved into a foster home (leaving behind a huge fan club at the vet clinic!), and is doing great. Here’s what his foster family has to say:

Wyatt is a Dream Dog! He is an incredibly sweet Golden with a perfect temperament. He gets very excited if we throw the ball with him or rough house a little in the yard (though we are keeping that to a minimum, as he is still taking it easy after his heartworm shots), but he’s nice and calm when it’s time to relax.

He settled right in from the very first day. He gets along exceptionally well with our Golden girl, Abby, and he’s very gentle with all our nieces and nephew, who range in age from 18 months to seven years. We haven’t let him interact with our cat yet, but we do know that he is very interested in her! We’ll try to make a formal introduction soon, so stay tuned.

While we’re at work during the day, we’ve been crating him. He does fine with that, but of course he prefers to be out loose and by your side. In the morning, while we get ready to head out, he loves to just lie out in the yard and relax. When he first arrived, we crated him at night, but now we just let him sleep on the floor next to our bed with Abby. They have become good buddies.

Wyatt must have been a house dog for at least a while in his past life, because we have yet to experience a single accident! And he’s very good about doing his business promptly when we let him outside. He didn’t seem to know any commands at all when he showed up, but he’s a smartie, very eager to please, and has responded very well to some initial training sessions. After going through some of the basics with him, we can say with confidence that he’ll learn fast if you’re willing to spend some time with him … and who wouldn’t want to do that! He’s absolutely adorable and will be a wonderful addition to any home.

UPDATE, 5/20/05
Wyatt continues to amaze us with his sweet temperament. He is just a pleasure to have around. He and our Golden girl Abby are great friends and seldom leave each other’s side.

Wyatt is finally used to our cat! At first, he didn’t know what to think and would just sit there and stare at her constantly. He’s now getting better at ignoring her, which is fine with her. But he’s never once been aggressive with her, nor has he ever chased her.

We no longer crate Wyatt. He sleeps on the floor next to our bed with Abby at night. During the day, he and Abby spend their time in the den. His perfect record of no housebreaking accidents is continuing!

Regarding training, we have been working mostly on the basics and practicing leash-walking. He is coming along very well, but can be very playful at times. He has a significant amount of energy. If anyone out there is a jogger, he’ll probably be a great companion for you once he’s completely clear of heartworms (his recheck is coming up soon).

Wyatt will make an exceptional addition to someone’s family. Everyone who meets him—our families and all our friends—falls in love with him instantly. He is a keeper!
