Gus = Super Dog!

Gus is a remarkable and loving family dog. He has come a long way in just one week.

When he came to us, he was one very scared golden retriever after being rescued from the Bastrop shelter. He refused to walk on a leash and sat shivering with fright. I had to physically pick him up and carry him to my van.  Although his body looked healthy his eyes told a story of abuse.

Well, that was then and now is now. Gus has come out of his shell and is proving everyday that he is truly a great dog. If I were to describe this 3 year-old male Golden Retriever with one word I would use "Super". If you were to look into his eyes now you would see a dog very eager to trust, please and show affection. He plays well with our kids and two dogs, Pete and Charlie. Our cat, Bonnie, plainly ignores the dogs and the dogs, including Gus, ignore Bonnie. He has proven to adapt well to his crate. In the beginning, he used it as a place of refuge when he felt uncertain about his environment. Now his crate is just his sleeping area and where he goes to be alone with his favorite toy. He has been caught being naughty. He snatches things from nearby table tops and hides them in his crate. He responds well to a gentle "no" and redirection.

Our golden, Charlie, is teaching Gus the ropes on retrieving. He is fast learning that he needs give the ball back rather than walk off with it. He continues to learn how to walk on a lead without dragging us down the block, running after other dogs or cowering in the presence of strangers. Gus has proven just how well dogs can learn to trust again and adjust to a loving and caring environment. And just like my other dogs, Gus will do just about anything for a dog biscuit. You see by the pictures that Gus spends a lot of time smiling! He loves attention and being close.

Quite frankly, if we did not have four kids, two other dogs, a cat and a strong desire to foster dogs that need help, we would make Gus a permanent member of our family.
