Jed is a wonderful 9-year-old boy who came into GRR care from an area veterinarian, when his owners could no longer take care of his chronic allergy problems. The vet knew that he would make someone a wonderful forever companion, so GRR was called. We were happy to take this sweet, and very deserving, young man into our care and he’s turned out to be everything we knew possible.

He immediately settled into our home, and gets along beautifully with our own golden, as well as with our cat. He loves to go for walks and meet other new friends in the neighborhood, and is very well behaved when being introduced to another dog. He is so gentle around kids of all ages and is very well mannered. He doesn’t jump up on people and has taken no interest in surfing the kitchen counter to see what might be cooking.

One of Jed’s favorite things to do is chew on a sterilized bone or a tennis ball. He loves to play fetch and will bring the ball back to you over and over, dropping it at your feet so you can throw it out for him again. When he’s ready to play, or excited to see you, he pounces on his front paws, in anticipation of the fun to come! Most of the time, though, he’s content to lie at your feet, or nudge your hand for a quick pat on his head, or just take a little nap. He’s quiet and calm in the house and only barks if he sees something out of the ordinary outside. We all had a few laughs the first few days Jed was with us, as he didn’t bark at all—he howled! The first time we heard it we thought, “What in the world is that horrendous sound???” and then realized that it was Jed and that he had lost track of where we were in the house. He just wanted to let us know where he was and that he wasn’t too happy that we’d left him by himself! Now that he’s been here a couple of weeks, we don’t hear the howling too much anymore. We’re sure it was just part of his settling in, and still get a chuckle out of our own initial reaction!

Jed is 100% housetrained and has free roam of the house when we’re not here. He’s completely trustworthy around any food left out on the counter, stuffed toys laying on the floor, or trash in the wastebasket. He just doesn’t have an interest in chewing up anything inappropriately. He sleeps on his own bed in the corner of our bedroom, and is very quiet all night long. When the alarm goes off, he’s ready to go outside and take care of his business, but is also content to let you hit the snooze button a couple of times, catching those last little bits of sleep.

We’re working on getting Jed’s allergies under control. Fortunately, they’re nothing that a little TLC can’t take care of. That means that we have to be sure his ears stay clean, that he stays on his restricted diet (special food and no dog treats), and that occasional meds are given to him to address any problems he might be having with itchy skin. The vet says that it’s the kind of thing that will probably just flare up from time to time, but that it’s very manageable. It doesn’t take much extra time to provide the care he needs and he is the perfect patient—sits quietly while you clean his ears and gobbles up his pills with his regular food. It doesn’t get much easier!

Jed is a wonderful dog and makes an immediate positive impression. You’d never believe he’s 9 years old—he looks and acts much younger, yet has the positive attributes of a more mature dog. He has a beautiful red coat, is at the right weight for his size, and is a perfect gentleman all the time. He has a wonderful Golden smile and lets you know how happy he is be so well loved. He’s going to make a wonderful addition to his new forever family!
