Harley

What do you think of when you hear the word “Harley?” Do you think of a big motorcycle with polished chrome? Do you think about a cool dude in a leather outfit cruising through the hill country on his “Fat Boy?” Or do you think about a big red golden retriever who is just about as cool as they come? I think about the golden retriever. Harley has been fostering with us for 7 days and he is one big ole hunk of golden love.

Harley came to GRR from the Seguine Animal Shelter. He was picked up stray and held for 10 days but no one came to claim him. The folks at the shelter really liked this guy but they knew if he wasn’t claimed he would have to be put down due to lack of space. Lucky for Harley they gave GRR a call and at the last minutes our Intake Director picked Harley up and he became the 74th dog that GRR has rescued this year.

He came to our home full of mats, some the size of your fist and matted all the way to the skin. He patiently enjoyed 2 baths and allowed us to cut out mats, trim his nails, clean his ears, pick off ticks, and brush him until our arms were tired and sore. He met our 3 dogs and liked them just fine; he also met our cat whom he thinks is pretty cool.

Harley is a big handsome guy who needs to lose some weight. He weighs 112 pounds and he should weigh between 80-85 pounds. He is on a strict diet and his forever family will need to be sure and keep him on a diet. He is playful and enjoys a romp around the back yard but since he is carrying around 30-35 extra pounds he gets tired quickly. Other than his weight problem he is very healthy. This guy is completely house trained; he goes to the back door and pushes aside the blinds when he needs to go outside. He sleeps comfortably next to our bed at night and does not wake up in the morning until I am ready to get up and start the day. His favorite thing to do is carry around one of my shoes. He doesn’t chew on shoes; he just likes carrying one around. I’ve tried substituting soft toys, or bones, but he prefers a tennis shoe or a nice sandal over a dog toy any day. It is obvious that in his previous home he was allowed to sleep on the furniture, he learned quickly that he wasn’t allowed to do that here and he is quite content to snooze on his dog bed or nap quietly next to one of our dogs.

Harley will fit nicely into any home. He is good with adults and kids alike. He is good with other dogs and he is very good with cats. Harley is happy to be living the good life with GRR and is waiting patiently for his forever home to come along.
