Adopted
Sandy
is a sweet 4-year-old Golden girl. She came to us about 2 weeks ago from an
owner who had to move into an apartment. She had been living strictly outside
for the last year, and when I invited her to come indoors, she looked up at me
like she couldn’t believe it!
The very first thing I noticed about Sandy is that she loves water. We didn’t
let her get into the pool for the first 2 days she was here, since she’d just
had Frontline—but her Golden foster sister Chi teased her by diving in, then
hopping out and shaking water all over Sandy. Sandy sent Chi an envious look,
and then looked at us with those pleading puppy eyes. So on her third day, we
invited her to climb down the pool steps. Boy, she lay there for a full half
hour, just soaking the lower half of her body and looking so content! It took us
a while to make her leave her doggie heaven…. The next day, we gently pushed her
in a little bit so she could swim, but apparently she doesn’t enjoy swimming as
much as just reclining on those nice cool, wet steps.
Sandy
is a master at separating foods. She is a little bit overweight at 89 pounds and
needs to shed about 7 of those, so we put her on diet. We mixed baby carrots
with her food to cut down on the calories. Unfortunately, this lady can actually
separate the carrots from the kibbles, even though we had taken great pains to
cut the carrots to the same size as the kibbles! She’s also taking vitamins to
help heal a minor skin problem—but getting the medicine down her is not always
easy either. We wrapped the pills in ham once and she happily accepted the
“surprise package,” but after a minute or so, she spat the vitamins out, while
the ham was safely inside her stomach. How she did that is beyond us! We’ve
decided that straight diet formula food and gradually increasing exercise might
be the best solution for her.
Grooming
her is really easy. She loves the attention and will let you do pretty much
everything while she happily sits still, including cleaning and rinsing her
ears. You can even trim her nails if you hold her paws firmly.
Sandy is a super girl who is gaining more confidence every day. She’s trimming
down nicely and we just love having her around. She will make a wonderful
addition to some lucky family!
