Deke

Deke came to us about two weeks ago—he was found as a stray. He was so matted that he had difficulty walking. He also had the overpowering smell of skunk from the "adventures" he had in the wild. Thankfully with a bit of grooming and bathing he is now a happy and much more comfortable boy. He is a beautiful red head with some premature white around his muzzle and has the true Golden nature-- loving, intelligent and patient.

Deke is such a sweet boy. He got along immediately with his foster sister and brother and although has been curious about the foster feline in the family, he has never barked or tried to chase her. Maybe he had a feline friend in his past life.

Deke is about 5 yrs.old and completely out of the puppy stage. He has been completely trustworthy in the house since the day we got him. We crated him the first few nights, but he prefers to sleep by the side of the bed and only gets up if I do. He loves to be with people but isn't an attention hog. Most of the time he's happy to lay quietly at your feet or across the room as long as he knows where the people are.

Deke hasn’t shown a lot of interest in playing with the other dogs, but then again, it’s been so wet outside that he hasn’t had much of a chance to run and mix it up with them outside. We do know he can chase a ball but hasn't figured out the bringing it back part yet. But, he’s so very smart, that once things dry up a little outside, I'm sure he'll be fetching like a pro. He "sits" and will lay down when told and we're working on ‘hold’ (stay).

Deke loves his evening walks. We go out every evening and he walks wonderfully on a leash. He'll walk at a heel if I tell him or out in front if I let out his leash. He's not the least bit interested in the dogs that bark at us but really perks up when we've spotted a bunny in an empty lot. Absolutely a fantastic walking companion! Never pulls. He likes chews and lovey toys but is not possessive of them. He does have the odd habit of putting a foot in his drinking bowl when he drinks!

He LOVES to ride in the SUV and will head to it whenever the garage door is open. Deke gets a little nervous during thunder storms, but not bad. My older dog is thunder-phobic, and it might be that he’s just picking up on her nervousness. He seems to prefer being in a small room during storms so we bed him down in the bathroom and he settles right down.

Someone lost a very special dog when they lost Deke!! He would be good as on "only" dog or with others. He'd be good for a family with school age kids because he doesn't need tons of attention but loves it when he gets it. He likes the outdoors and if the way he drinks is any indication -- he'll like the water.
