Adopted
Sonny
Say hello to Sonny! He’s a
medium-colored, 2 year old male looking for a loving home. He’s a tall one with
the most beautifully expressive almond shaped eyes. When Sonny originally came
in to GRR care his ears were severely infected and his skin was suffering from
Staph infections, due to some type of allergic reaction. He was adopted by a
family who helped bring him back to a healthy status but sadly, they could not
keep him.
Someone has spent some time with Sonny. He is completely housetrained and shows
impeccable manners in the house – he hasn’t chewed or shred anything and he’s
not a counter surfer. He will sit and lay down on command and he has the run of
the house at all times. He is affectionate and really loves to be brushed and
groomed. He even stands completely still when I clip his toenails. What a good
boy!!.
The only time I am reminded that he is still a young one is when he plays. His
favorite activity is to wrestle around with his foster sibling. He totes stuffed
animals, rope toys and tennis balls around the house. I even once saw him
entertain himself with a june bug that he caught out of mid air. The most
memorable Sonny moment was when he brought the live (and unharmed) opossum into
the house. He had it by the base of the tail and it was curled up, hanging
upside down like some rope toy. He was so proud of himself! I am still not sure
how he managed it --given that I live in the city and have a small backyard.
He isn’t a very reliable retriever but I think he could be taught. In true
golden form, Sonny is confident in the water and is a strong swimmer in deep
water. He hasn’t attempted a jump off the dock yet. He really is a great, sporty
dog. And, he takes his sport to chasing any small, running animals – like
squirrels, birds, small dogs or cats. If they run, he takes chase. Yikes! I
don’t think he’s out to hurt any of these small animals (case in point; the live
opossum) and he might actually stop if a cat were to stand his ground. But Sonny
thinks it’s a sport and will need to be kept on his leash when around those
small, running critters.
Based on his history, Sonny appears to be prone to allergic reactions and his
skin and ears need to be monitored every few days to make sure he is OK. We are
not sure what triggers it, but since I have had him he hasn’t had any problems,
so I don’t think he is too sensitive. Only time will tell how severe (or mild)
his susceptibility to allergens is.
So if you’re looking for a fun-loving, sporty guy with impeccable house manners,
Sonny is Golden.
