Adopted

Ashley

Hi!  My name is Ashley. I’m a 3-year-old gal and I just moved to Austin from San Antonio.  I lived with someone who put an advertisement in the paper to say that I was “free to a good home”.  What’s THAT all about?  I’m a beautiful dog—not an old sofa!  A wonderful Good Samaritan called my owner and explained the terrible things that sometimes happen to dogs who are “adopted” from these kinds of ads.  She really was my guardian angel and told my owner that she would take me.  Lucky me!

My new sister came with my new foster mom to pick me up.  I showed them just how well I ride in the car!  For the most part, I rode quietly in the back seat, but every now and then I poked my head up in the front to check out what was happening up there.

And another neat thing.  We didn’t go straight to my new foster home.  First, we went to a soccer game where I got to meet my new brother and the family’s dog (an almost 10-year-old golden).  What fun!  All the people were petting me and playing with me, and I had them fooled into thinking that I’d been part of this family for quite a while!

Next, we headed to my new house.  That was fun, too!  I sniffed and sniffed my way around, checking everything out.  I even checked out the cat.  She wasn’t too interested in me but of course, being a cat, it took a good couple of good swipes at my nose for her to let me know that she wasn’t interested.  Geez Louise, just tell me!  We’ve already become pretty good friends, though, so I guess I shouldn’t rely too much on first impressions.  She’s a pretty cool cat after all.

My new foster family didn’t realize how nicely I take treats.  I barely open my mouth and let them just kind of slide it in there.  It works great!  I like to savor my treats, and my food, too!  I don’t like to be rushed.

My new foster mom calls me “Velcro Dog”.  Hey, can I help it that I want to be where the action is?  I’m a golden, after all.  I like to follow my foster mom, and the other members of my foster family around, just to be sure that I don’t miss out on anything!  And, with so many toys and stuffed animals around, it sure would be tempting to chew something up.  But, I’m really trying to show them how good I am so don’t chew anything inappropriate.  They’ve given me a neat bone to chew on and that keeps me perfectly happy.

And, the best news of all—I surprised my foster parents by sleeping all the way through the first night.  Were they doubting me??  One of the things I can do really well is sleep!  You bet.  Give me a nice carpeted floor, a warm bed, or even a few cool tiles, and I’m out.  And I don’t even get up when the alarm goes off—if my foster parents hit the snooze button, I’m right there snoozing with them.

Oh, and did I mention that I am 100% house trained??  Yep!  I’m very reliable in that department.

All in all, I’m just a darn good dog and I really behave well.

Ok, I guess I need to be honest here.  I could probably use a bit of dog obedience education.  My foster mom is helping me learn “stay” and she is teaching me not to pull on the leash when we go on walks. I like to weave back and forth; it makes it easier to check out things on both sides of the street.  My golden foster walks nicely on her leash — she’s good about walking or jogging in a straight line, so I’ll try to use her as a role model.

So far, things are going well.  I like my foster home; however, I’m really looking forward to getting settled into my new forever home. I’m hoping for a family that I can give lots of love to, and get lots of love in return.  I hope you’ll consider making me a part of your own family.
