Adopted

Indy is adorable and beginning to come out of his shell.  He came to us as a scared boy who would only lay on the ground and hide in the back of the kennel - never anything but passive.  After one week, he now plays with my "pack", goes in and out the door without having to be carried, and will even eat in front of me.  He is just now beginning to stop the cowering in the kennel, and last night he barked and howled!  The first sounds he has made!  He is beginning to take treats from my hand and respond to praise.  It will take a while more, but he will be a great dog.

Update on Indy:

Hi, my name is Indy.  They tell me that is short for Independence because I was rescued on July 4th.  I used to be so shy and scared that all I wanted to do was hide in a corner or in the crate, but these days I am trying to make up for lots of lost time.  There is so much for me to learn and it is all so fun!!!

I am so happy to see the people when they come home - it didn't take me long to figure out that it feels great to have someone rub my belly and scratch behind my ears.  I love to sneak in a lick or two when I can - especially when I am getting sleepy.

My foster family is really happy because I have learned some new tricks.  I am great at "sit" and "shake"  and am working really hard on "down".  Just keep those treats coming.  My favorite thing to do is play with toys, especially tennis balls, and wrestle with my golden foster sisters and brothers.

My foster family has a cat and a 6 year old boy also.  I really like both of them.  I am very nice to the cat, I don't even chase her.  She thinks I am funny because I talk to her so loudly.  I really want her to play with me.  Their little boy is fun too.  I like to snuggle with him and get lots of hugs.

If I could pick the perfect home for me it would include at least 1 other dog that likes to play.  I am really good at following a friend, especially when something makes me nervous.  It's easier to learn all the rules when you have someone to watch.

From his foster family:

It is unbelievable the growth Indy has made in the socialization department.  He may never be the outgoing one, but he is extremely affectionate and loving.  We haven't found anyone that he doesn't go to eagerly after just a few minutes of checking them out.  He comes now when you call him and seeks out your attention when he wants it - which is quite often usually.

He is also one of the best behaved puppies I have ever seen.  Only one potty accident in a month. He is very good about going to the door when he needs to go out - and just when he wants to go out.  The backyard is such a fun place to hang out!!  Boy can he run.......and run.....and run..... He doesn't jump up on people and waits patiently at the backdoor until you let him in.

Indy has not shown signs of being interested in all the human items left laying about - shoes, toys, etc.  We have a large selection of dog toys and bones that he loves to drag all over the house.  If he can't talk one of his foster brothers or sisters into playing, he is content to toss a toy around on his own - completely entertaining himself.  He is great with both male and female dogs, as well as cats and kids.  We've taken him out on the boat which he seemed to really enjoy once he got the hang of it.   Don't know how he feels about swimming yet though.  My guess is he will love it since he likes to climb in the water bowl we sometimes have outside.  (Thank goodness he chooses to only drink out of the one in the house)

Indy is a very LARGE puppy who is going to grow into a very LARGE dog.  However, with his calm temperament and ability to learn quickly, training should not be too difficult.  So far, the only thing he has been unable to totally overcome since staying with us is his fear of the leash.  He definitely doesn't care for anything to be placed around his neck.  Fortunately, once he is wearing the leash and you can talk him into actually walking out the front door, he is fine.  He will willing walk down the street, around the block, etc.  This process is all much easier if he has one of his foster siblings to follow.  He prefers to walk right next to one of them.....touching them at all times actually.  It's my guess that he will never be a "bolter" as it is difficult getting out the front door at all.

Indy goes willingly into his crate with his towel, bone and kong and stays there while we work during the day.  We are not crating him in the evening, but instead he is sleeping in our room on a dog bed with a few toys and a bone to play with when he wakes up in the middle of the night - which he generally does.  He doesn't disturb anyone, and doesn't need to go out at this time, just likes to play for a few minutes before settling in again.

I can't say enough wonderful things about this big, beautiful,  blonde guy.  It has been such a joy having him in our home.  He behaves very much like our 2 and 4 year old dogs instead of the 5 month old puppy that he is. Indy needs a home with people who will love and understand him even when he shows a little nervousness about new situations.  He also needs to live with another dog to be truly happy.  Whoever adopts Indy is going to have such a special addition to their home.
