ADOPTED

Ace says he doesn’t need a nursing home any longer – he’s ready to move to a retirement community…shuffleboard, hanging out on the boardwalk, and playing the ponies!

When Ace entered Rescue, he had a bum ticker – a heart that beat too slowly. Specialized heart medication, given 3 times daily, has sped his heart rate from 45 to 85 beats per minute – no wonder he has more steam! Ace is age 10, but you would never know it. He is sharp as a tack and he moves like a young buck. Ace is ready to move to a permanent foster home or an adoptive home, where his new family can give him lots of car rides & fun & love.

Ace is one of the few dogs ever to come through Rescue, with doctor’s orders to be a lazy couch potato – literally. His body’s natural pacemaker failed, so his heart can not compensate for a really high heart rate. If Ace was younger and if Rescue had unlimited funds, Ace would have surgery & receive an artificial pacemaker. Instead, we successfully manage Ace’s heart with $1 per day meds and activity restriction. No walks, runs, swims or Frisbee for our Ace. This boy has orders to hang around the house, take it easy and enjoy life.

Ace finds it comical to climb onto the couch, gaze intently at his human victim and insist, “Put away the computer and talk to me.” When ignored, Ace delicately places his cold nose on exposed flesh, getting an instant response; usually an arm around his shoulders so he can cuddle close.

Ace is the neighborhood gossip. When we prop open the back door and blissfully enjoy cool Austin mornings, Ace eventually starts communicating with the neighbor’s white German Shepherd, Dixie. Dixie starts out with a muffled woof, checking to see if her pal has finished breakfast. “So what did you have this morning?” she inquires. Ace smugly proclaims, “Solid Gold dog food, a bite of Honey Nut Cheerios & vanilla yogurt.” By the time Dixie & Ace deliberate the advisability of eating apple slices, a human arm waves the chatty Golden into the house, bringing quiet to the neighborhood once more.

Ace is consummate car rider, a perfect traveling buddy. He is happy to ride shotgun, best pals with the driver. Ace is equally skilled at cruising through the neighborhood on the nightly dog drive, seven Golden Retrievers packed into the back of the Explorer, 15 mile per hour, windows up tight if its over 90 degrees outside, windows down with the air conditioner blasting if its cooler.

Ace is trustworthy loose in the house, housetrained, and gentle when taking treats. He is a good pal to our household of Old Goldens. We think he would be fine with cats as long as they were dog savvy. Ace is a friend & companion & he is young at heart. In fact, we think Ace is pretty darned perfect. Ace is ready for his own special family to love.
