Adopted

Tucker age 3

Tucker is a 3 or 4-year-old gorgeous red male golden retriever. Picked up as a stray, he was in a San Antonio shelter until a shelter worker kindly called GRR.  Two GRR volunteers worked together to bring Tucker to Austin.

Tucker is around 70 pounds right now but could stand to gain about 10-15 pounds.  He most likely lost weight while on the streets.  He is recovering from getting neutered just after leaving the shelter.

Tucker does very well around our children, ages 6 and 9.  He also plays well with our one- year-old puppy.  He is playful and just loves to be loved!!  Tucker responds to several commands including:  “Come”; “Sit”; “Down”; “Leave It:; “Drop It!” and “Enough!”.

Tucker is getting used to his crate.  He sleeps there at night without barking and spends time there also when we are away from home.  From what we can tell, he had never been crated before; but he doesn’t resist it!  He seems to be learning the command “Crate Up!”

What a great time we’ve had watching him react to finally being inside after roaming the streets of San Anton’!  He is grateful for all the hugs, snacks, and dish after dish of food for which he does not have to scavenge!  After he has played awhile, he is happy to lie down on the floor at your feet and gaze into your eyes!  He does counter surf a little and is a little too tempted by food that we may be eating at the table…while we are eating it.  However, we simply say, “No Begging” a few times and he relents and finds a comfy spot on the floor to wait out our meal.  He finishes his food much faster than our puppy; so we carefully watch so that Tucker doesn’t finish it for her!

Tucker does well on the leash and doesn’t seem bothered by cats while he is on walks.  Up close, though, if the cat is aggressive, Tucker will react.  It may be too soon to tell how he would do in a home with a cat.  The vet technician did not think he had been raised around a cat judging by the unfamiliar way he responded to a clinic cat the tech brought in.  He would, however, do well with or without children.  He is very gentle; but he is a standard size male who will get bulkier with the right diet.

A few weeks ago Tucker was a real mystery to us.  No one knew his history or otherwise much about his habits.  Right away, though, we all recognized what a wonderfully gentle soul he has!  We’ve been around him long enough now to know that he will be an extremely nice addition to his new forever family!
