Adopted

Duchess, age 6...We met  Duchess at Margo’s  home a couple of weeks ago.  Curled in the corner with her “baby” (a stuffed rabbit), she looked quite lonely, but as I crouched down to her, she began inching forward, a small wiggle in her tail.  She had found a friend, and taken the first step in her journey to find a forever home.

She was a little hesitant at first, but soon decided that Ralph, Cecil and I would make okay companions.  She loves going in the car, and loves to swim. As soon as we introduced her to our backyard, with our ponds, she was in. She has proven herself a grand fetcher, prefers being indoors, and when left on her own, will park in the comfiest of places.  A summer afternoon will find her alternatively lounging on the couch, watching the birds playing in the pond, or sprawled with a stuffed toy in the middle of our bed (if we were foolish enough to leave the bedroom door open).

Ms. D, (Indian name  “Her Royal-D”), loves teasing our 4 1/2 yr old golden, Cecil.  They romp all over the backyard and wrestle with each other, playing tug and tease.  While she still eyes the cool fishpond, a sharp “NO” was all it took to warn her away, and it has never posed a problem. This 6 1/2 yr old love sponge thinks nirvana is lying on the couch curled against her people, watching TV as she gets her belly rubbed.  And should you start massaging her ears, she positively melts.  She loves people, and kids, though she doesn’t get to be around many just now, and is slow to warm up to unknown dogs.  She is pretty smart. When we give her a command, it seems like she tests us, to see if “we know what the words mean” before she responds

At 83+ lbs, walks were not her favorite pastime, but as she is losing weight, ~78lbs., we are noticing she enjoys them more and more. A little insecure on walks, Duchess would take her leash in her mouth and try to lead you back home. Now she carries one of her “babies” with her on her walks and she’ll go for miles.

Duchess would thrive in a home where she could love and be loved like an only child.  She wants nothing more than to please, play, be loved, and eat lots of treats.
