Adopted

Pepper, one of Heidi's male puppies was born on May 20th.  Watch for more as we get to know his personality better.

If you are interested in adopting  one of Heidi's pups, please review the puppy section on our website to determine if a puppy is right for you.  The Black Gold Litter was born 5/20/01 to Heidi. Heidi arrived in the last week of her pregnancy and it was far too late to spay her. Heidi's former owner told us the father is a Chocolate Lab.

The pups have been highly socialized with other dogs, children of all ages and adults. They are amazingly healthy and happy. The Lab/Golden Retriever cross is a great mix often deliberately bred for Service & Seeing Eye dogs. The cross breeding produces what is called “Hybrid Vigor” which means they should not inherit any of the typical purebred genetic tendencies (health problems) of either Labs or Golden Retrievers. In all actuality, they should be healthier and heartier than their purebred ancestors who have been so tightly inbred.

Approximately 7/15, the pups will be 8 weeks of age and ready to go to their new, loving and forever homes. If you are interested in adopting one of the pups, please review the puppy section on our website to determine if a puppy is right for you and then fill out an adoption application ASAP. Each pup will be placed through the normal adoptive procedures of GRR. It is our goal to have their new, forever homes approved and ready to take them home as soon as they are ready to get on with their new lives!

5/21/01 - Update

Heidi and her "very dark chocolate" pups are doing fine according to their vet check. Heidi is a great mother and loves her babes. We proudly announce the debut of the "Black Gold Litter", the first litter ever born in care here at GRR.

There are 6 girls and 4 boys: Coal, Ebony, Jet, Pitch, Licorice, Pepper, Lava, Onyx, Fudge & Inky.

6/1/01- Update

All are doing well and getting bigger everyday. They are cute little butterballs who now weigh between 2-3 pounds. Their eyes should be opening shortly. Heidi is doing great and is the perfect Mommy to her brood.

6/11/01 Update

They are now three weeks old and just had their first dinner of “puppy gruel” They enjoyed it but what a mess! Their eyes are open, they are learning to walk (wobbling) and they are quite cute!

6/30/01 Update

They are all quite a handful they are learning to run and tumble. It’s hard to keep track of ten at once. They are all getting big, fat and sassy. Each is starting to develop their own personality and characteristics.

7/8/01 Update-

Well they are Seven weeks old now and getting cute as can be.  They already carry tennis balls around in their mouths and have learned to swim! They all love the water and show no fear of it.  They get in the shallow area of the pool (supervised of course) and dog paddle around to their hearts content. They also love the baby pool that was originally their whelping box.  It has  now become their private little water park in the afternoons. They get bigger and funnier everyday.  They have lots of puppy antics and love to romp and play.  Their personalities are starting to emerge, and it's great to watch them grow and change each day.

07/25/01 update:

Pepper should have been named "sugar" instead.  He's about as sweet and soft as they come.  He was the big boy of the litter as well as the bright boy. He did everything first, likely because he was the biggest.  He's extremely smart and loves to please.  He's happy snooping around the yard or house on his own but then comes and softly sits by you waiting for a pat and a nuzzle then he's off again.  He's got the cutest expression that seems to say 'love me and I'll be your devoted friend for life...'  it just melts your heart to see him looking up at you!

He's got a short, soft coat with a handsome blocky head and a beautiful face.  His head looks all Golden in terms of size and shape but his coat is definitely more that of a Lab's.  He will probably be a bigger (70-80#) boy when he grows into his paws.  He is not at all hyper, does not jump up on you and is all and all very polite.

He's always a happy guy and loves everyone he meets.  He's great in the crate and ex-pen.  He's working on potty training but so far has not chewed anything appropriate.  He loves kids and other dogs but is not at all pushy. He's very soft in taking treats and hardly mouths humans at all.

He loves to chase balls and does a fairly good retrieve.  He also loves the water and has not yet figured out that he CAN take a drink without his front two paws being it the bowl at the same time!  He will make a great dog and we'd keep him in a heartbeat if we had the time to devote to the training that he will need to become a model canine citizen.
