Chester
age
4-5, is a beautiful tall red boy coming to us from a very nice vet who
'rescued' him herself. Chester was found stray by a young man who
took him in and tried to take care of him. At the time he found Chester,
he was thin, had lots of fleas and a rash from all the flea bites.
After having him a couple months, Chester wasn't getting better so he took him
to the vet. Chester was really sick -- he'd gotten an infection from
all the flea bites. The young man could not afford to take care of Chester
and the vet agreed to help him get to rescue.
Chester spent 11 days with the kind vet getting his strength back. He is still about 15# underweight but is doing great and is one of the nicest dogs you'll ever meet. He is good with other dogs, seems to be good with cats and loves people, especially those who rub his tummy.
Chester has been with us for several weeks now. He is one of the sweetest dogs I have known! He has settled in beautifully. He still likes to be near me, but he’s also happy to hang out by himself or with Cricket. Chester was nervous for about 4 days when he arrived. He paced a lot and wouldn’t lie still. Now he’s perfectly at home. He runs around with Cricket playing “bitey-head” (you know that really fun game where you chase each other and bite each other’s head and pull on each other’s collars and ears? The one where you get really slobbery and wet?), but he rarely starts it himself and I think he’s only doing it because of peer pressure. He’s just as happy to sit and stare at the cat or sleep on the floor. He’d do fine in a home with any level of activity.
Chester is a big love bug. He will curl up with me and stay for hours! He LOVES to be cuddled! He even thinks it’s fun to be used as a big pillow. He enjoys being brushed and is happy to lie on his back and roll around to help me get every spot. He’s not demanding about attention. If we tell him to “Back off”- he will. He just takes it when he can get it.
He is now crate trained! He goes in with out a second thought, lies down, and waits for his treats. His favorite is his peanut butter stuffed Kong. We don’t hear a peep out of him all night. I really think he’d be so much happier if he could sleep our room, but we have too many creatures in there already. Hopefully his Forever Family will be able to let him sleep in their room.
Chester is completely trustworthy in the house. I have left him for more than 8 hours and not had an accident. In fact, one day I was gone and he walked into my closet and the door closed behind him. I don’t know how long he was actually stuck in there, but he was shut in a small space FULL of yummy shoes and he didn’t touch even one.
Our only problem is with our cat. He LOVES her. He has to know where she is always and will sit just staring at her forever. He doesn’t try to hurt her; he just thinks she’s awfully pretty! If my cat liked Chester, it would all be fine. I think he has visions of them curled up together on his bed. Unfortunately, she’d rather scratch his eyes out…
He’s learned several commands. He can jump straight up about 3 feet off the ground when I say, “JUMP!”, he can fetch, sit, come, stay (most of the time), and lay down. The funny thing is that I have been trying so hard to get him to “shake” and he just won’t do it. I’ll keep trying, but I don’t know that he’ll ever get it.
Chester is very calm, not a hyper bone in his body and will sit still for love as long as you will dish it out! He is a low maintenance, friendly, cuddly, and wonderful dog. He’s very sweet and loving and his tail NEVER stops wagging (even if he’s being scolded). He even wagged his tail during his bath yesterday! I haven’t seen him around children, but he’s so sweet and gentle, I cannot imagine that he’s be anything but wonderful with them! He’s a pretty goofy guy. We think he looks like a big bear. With his big droopy eyes and the sweet, silly cowlick of hair that sticks up on the back of his head, it’s impossible not to smile when you see him! He’ll be a fantastic family dog! Someone is going to be very lucky to have this super dog!
