Remembered

Savannah is a 7-8 year old female found near the lake. Unfortunately, "only the good die young..." as the saying goes.  Savannah has cancer and only has a limited time to spend (about 3-9 months) on this earth in her newfound and beloved life as a housedog.  She is not in pain and has a good quality of life, at this point.  GRR's goal is to maintain that for as long as possible.  She has earned her "Golden Days" and when they are done, and her quality of life becomes impaired, she will be lovingly put to sleep.  We are seeking an adoptive or permanent foster home for her.  This is her poem, might you be the loving family she so desperately wants to spend the rest of her days with?

Savannah’s Poem

I was walking around; I didn’t know what to do.

So I headed to the lake, I was feeling quite blue.

Some nice people stopped to pet my head,

But then, “Ooh, you smell really bad”, they said.

I wanted to tell them it wasn’t my fault,

Just look in my ears and you’ll see the reason.

I stood on the dock, watching everyone there,

They all had dogs, and treated them with such love and care.

A long time ago my family loved me,

But now they don’t want me so I’m very lonely.

I sat there all alone, not knowing what to do

Then a lady came up and said, “Hey, who are you?”

I had no way to tell her I was lost and alone

So I wagged my tail and hoped she’d take me home.

The nice lady’s husband helped me up in the big truck,

I rode home in the back seat with another dog, boy what good luck.

I was so quiet and happy; I slept all the way,

When we arrived I thought, “This is MY lucky day.”

I got a bath, it felt really good, she brushed me and groomed me,

I must say I looked good.

I went to the Vet for a check up,

Terrible ear infections... I hear the Vet say,

Some medicine will make them better; it will take a few days.

There was a lump on my tummy and one up on my chest

I was afraid for them to find out, I knew my health wasn’t the best.

Surgery came next as the tumors must go

They hoped and they prayed, but I already know

I have maybe nine months left to live

But gosh I still have plenty of love left to give.

We left the Vet and my foster mom took me back home,

She told me not to worry, never again would I be alone.

Now I take medicine, I take it everyday,

It helps to keep the cancer at bay.

I can still be adopted; I promise that I’m good

I’m totally house broken and I’d love you, oh I would!

Knowing that I don’t have years left to give,

Is there someone who’ll love me for the time I’ve left to live?

Our time may be short, but we’ll make it count

I have a big heart and I will love you oh so much

From the moment we meet ‘til the last time we touch.

Here is an update from her foster parents:

Savannah is very sweet and is content to lay on the floor next to me as I work on the computer.  She is not pushy about getting attention.  She will not push the other dogs out of the way when I am giving them pets, hugs and kisses.  She waits her turn. She knows sit and shake. She runs in the back yard with our dog but she can't keep up with him for long.  She goes into her the crate and also gets along with our cat who thinks he's a dog.  At her recent vet check up she was fine with the cats.  She simply looked at them and went on her way; she was not the least bit interested in them.  She is fat at 78 pounds and needs to drop about 10 pounds.  She is housebroken, not one accident.  I like her a lot, she is sweet and seems soft.   She spends lots of time sleeping, she snores like a fright train, and she has a very unladylike burp.

Last Sunday night our friends came over and brought "Jacks" their 4-month-old GR. He is so cute.  Jacks and Duke (our 4 year old GR) are buddies, they know each other from being on our boats at the lake.  Sage didn't like Jacks at all, she snipped at him because he wouldn't leave her alone.  Sierra ignored him, but Savannah - she followed him around.  When they went out to potty Savannah walked down the steps from the deck and nudged him with her nose to get him into the yard.  Then stayed beside him while he pottied.  She was so good with him.  He played with her and she was very patient, when he got on her nerves, she pushed him away with her nose and went to the other side of the room.  Jacks knew to leave her alone from then on.  I think Savannah must have had puppies during her life, because she was sure acting like a mommy to little Jacks.
