Adopted
Jake,
age 12 comes to us from a family who loved him very much. Jake’s human
kids were very allergic to him and they were forced to keep him outside or in
the garage. They knew that was no life for this grand old guy and
tearfully turned him into rescue to get him a better one. He gets this
report from intake:
“He’s been shaved so coat is very short but is still a good-looking guy. He is healthy as a horse but is quite hard of hearing. You have to use a high-pitched voice or a loud deep voice. I was quite surprised at how zippy & active Jake was. He could pass for a younger dog. He is in great shape for his age.
“He has settled in quite well. He met his foster brother Sam nicely. Jake brought a toy with him, and he shares it nicely with Sam his foster brother. He likes tennis balls. He is eating & drinking fine. Likes grapes. Thin, could gain 3-5 lbs but looks nice. Good on a leash, housebroken, slept loose the first night and does not need to be crated as he is fine loose in the house. He stays off the furniture and is great in the car.
“Jake would have been a member of the Rowdy Boys Club when he was young now he is just a wonderful & nice old guy. This fella should be quite adoptable. I really liked him a lot.”
His name is Jake. He’s got the spirit of a kid and the manners of a prince. He was delivered to us on Friday, February 9, 2001, and quickly adapted to our home. This included meeting our other princely Golden Retriever named Sam. They checked each other out and then went to the back yard and played. There was never a moment of aggression or snapping. They just played. Admittedly, Jake had just been neutered and wasn’t ready for roughhousing. In fact, some of his play indicated that he didn’t know he’d been neutered! Jake figured out that Sam wasn’t his type, or vice versa, and they got along very well.
Jake has proven to be one of the most well mannered Goldens we’ve seen. He refuses to get up on furniture, or beds, is very well housebroken, and has all the loveable lean-on-you traits we love. He’s a happy 12-year old who is active and fun. He’s a little hard of hearing, so has to see you when you’re talking to him. He has some minor ear itching, and shakes his head occasionally, but we’re treating him for the junk in his ears. His muzzle and eyebrows have gray in them, and that’s the only telltale sign (other than his hearing) that he’s a senior citizen.
Jake has a great disposition with Sam and other dogs, walks well on a leash, and doesn’t pull when he’s walked. He’s been around the neighborhood children and has a good level disposition with small children. He sleeps on the floor in our bedroom and ranges loosely throughout the house. No problem. We have left him for up to seven hours in the house with Sam, our other Golden, without any incident. Not only that, but when you arrive home he greets you with either a tennis ball, old bone, or toy in his mouth. He’s ready to play.
Jake’s not a lap dog, but he’ll win the “Best-Lovable-Lean-on-You-Dog” award any time it’s awarded. He will be a perfect companion for anybody. There’s a lot of love left in Jake and he’ll reward anyone who wants another friendly face around the house!|
Note for those of you who follow GRR History, the dog on the left is Sam, our Extraordinary Golden who was injured and abandoned last fall. Sam is Jake's foster brother - doesn't he look great! |
